Mumbai Indians (MI) is a professional Twenty20 cricket team based in Mumbai, India. The team competes in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and also participates in the Women's Premier League (WPL). Established in 2008, the franchise is owned by Indiawin Sports, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries. The team plays its home matches at the Wankhede Stadium.[1][2]

Mumbai Indians is regarded as one of the most successful franchises in IPL history. It became the most valuable IPL franchise in 2019 and was the first to cross a brand valuation of $100 million in 2017.[3][4]

History

The Mumbai franchise was announced in January 2008 when the Board of Control for Cricket in India introduced eight city-based teams for the inaugural IPL season. The franchise was purchased by Reliance Industries Limited for US$111.9 million which made it the priciest team in existence at that moment. Mukesh Ambani successfully obtained ownership rights to the business. [5][6]

Achievements

Mumbai Indians has won the IPL title five times—in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020—making it one of the most successful teams in the league. The team also won the now-defunct Champions League Twenty20 in 2011 and 2013.

As of recent seasons, Hardik Pandya serves as the team captain, while Mahela Jayawardene is associated with the coaching setup. Rohit Sharma is the team’s leading run-scorer, and Lasith Malinga holds the record for most wickets.

Home Ground

In its initial seasons (2008–2009), Mumbai Indians played home matches at the DY Patil Stadium. In 2010, due to renovations at Wankhede Stadium for the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, the team hosted matches at the Brabourne Stadium, where they won six out of seven games.

Currently, the team plays its home matches at Wankhede Stadium, which is owned by the Mumbai Cricket Association and has a seating capacity of approximately 33,108. The stadium is named after S. K. Wankhede.[7]

Team Overview

The team’s motto is “Duniya Hila Denge Hum...”, meaning “We will rock the world.” The original anthem based on this slogan featured Hrithik Roshan.

The Mumbai Indians logo is inspired by the Sudarshan Chakra, a symbolic representation from Indian mythology. Initially, the team was proposed to be named “Mumbai Razors,” but it was later renamed “Mumbai Indians” following suggestions by Sachin Tendulkar.

The team’s primary colors are blue and gold. The jersey design has evolved over the years, with golden stripes introduced in 2010. From 2008 to 2014, kits were manufactured by Adidas, while since 2015, they have been produced by Performax.[8][9][10]
