Namboori Thakur Tilak Varma is an Indian international cricketer who plays as a left-handed batsman and part-time off-spin bowler. He plays domestic cricket for Hyderabad and his Indian Premier League (IPL) team is Mumbai Indians. Tilak has established himself as one of India’s most promising middle-order batsmen because of his power hitting and his ability to maintain calmness during stressful situations.[1][2]

Early Life

Tilak Varma was born in 8 November 2002 Kukatpally area of Hyderabad, Telangana, into a Telugu family. Tilak developed an interest in cricket at an early age and was spotted by coach Salam Bayash when he was just 11 years old. Bayash mentored him at the Legala Cricket Academy in Lingampally, even helping with travel arrangements for long distances until the family relocated closer to the academy.

Education

Tilak completed his schooling at Crescent Model English School and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad. His next school after that was Lepakshi Junior College which is located in Hyderabad.

Career

Tilak Varma made his first-class debut for Hyderabad in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy on 30 December 2018. He made his T20 debut in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in February 2019 and his List A debut in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in September 2019.

He was part of India’s squad for the 2020 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. The Asian Games held in Hangzhou 2023 saw him compete for India and the team won gold in the men’s T20 event which Ruturaj Gaikwad led as captain.

Tilak received the captaincy for India 'A' during the 2024 ACC Men’s T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup which took place in Oman. He served as captain of South Zone during the 2025–26 Duleep Trophy.

Indian Premier League

Mumbai Indians acquired Tilak Varma through the 2022 IPL auction. He made an impressive start to the season by scoring 61 runs against Rajasthan Royals. He scored 84 runs against Royal Challengers Bangalore and he scored 43 runs during a playoff game against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023.

International Career

Tilak made his T20 International (T20I) debut for India in August 2023 against the West Indies, where he top-scored with 39 runs. He achieved his first T20I half-century and became India’s top run-scorer throughout the series.

He made his ODI debut in September 2023 against Bangladesh during the Asia Cup. His first T20I century came in November 2024 when he scored 107 runs and he followed that performance with a 120-run unbeaten innings in the following game.

Tilak achieved a match-winning performance in the 2025 Asia Cup final against Pakistan by scoring 69 runs and thus earning the Player of the Match award.

He participated in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after recovering from surgery and he helped India win the championship.

Tilak Varma is one of the top cricket players from India because he excels in both domestic and international competitions. His T20 matches demonstrate that he can perform well under pressure, which has helped India develop a stronger middle-order batting lineup.
