Tamil Nadu is a state in southern India. It is famous for its cultural heritage, ancient temples, and contributions to art, literature, and industry. It shares borders with Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. It also has a seafront on the Bay of Bengal. The capital and biggest city of Tamil Nadu is Chennai.

Etymology

The word “Tamil Nadu” literally means “Land of Tamils.” It consists of two parts: “Tamil” refers to Tamils, a linguistic and ethnic group, and “Nadu” means “land” or “country.” Earlier, it was called “Madras State” but was renamed “Tamil Nadu” in 1969.

History

The history of Tamil Nadu is very rich and ancient, dating back to the Sangam period, when there was a lot of classical Tamil literature.

The region was ruled by great empires such as the Cholas, Cheras, and Pandyas, who helped shape the art, architecture, and trade of this region. During the medieval period, the Chola Empire expanded its empire across Southeast Asia.
