Chhattisgarh is located in central India. It is known for its mineral wealth, forests, and tribal traditions. It was created on November 1, 2000, by partitioning Madhya Pradesh. Chhattisgarh is bordered by states such as Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. Raipur is the capital city of Chhattisgarh. It is also the largest city in Chhattisgarh.

Etymology

The name “Chhattisgarh” is thought to have been formed by using Hindi words “Chhattis,” meaning thirty-six, and “Garh,” meaning forts. This is because there were thirty-six ancient forts in Chhattisgarh. However, it is also thought that “Chhattisgarh” was originally “Chedisgarh,” which is named after the ancient Chedi dynasty.

History

The history of Chhattisgarh is quite rich. In the past, it used to be part of various other kingdoms. It is said to be associated with the Dakshina Kosala kingdom in the ancient days.

In the medieval days, it came under the rule of various dynasties such as Kalachuri. Later, it came under the Maratha Empire and then under the British Empire.

After India's independence in 1947, it came under the state of Madhya Pradesh. Due to certain administrative and cultural reasons, it came to be known as a separate state in 2000.

Geography
