Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), formerly known as Royal Challengers Bangalore, is a professional Twenty20 cricket team based in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The team competes in the Indian Premier League and was established in 2008 by United Spirits. It plays its home matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

RCB is one of the most popular and valuable franchises in the IPL. After several near misses, the team won its maiden IPL title in 2025. Prior to this, it had finished as runners-up in 2009, 2011, and 2016, and has qualified for the playoffs multiple times.

As of 2025, Rajat Patidar serves as the team’s captain, while Andy Flower is the head coach. The franchise has also competed in the Champions League Twenty20, finishing as runners-up in 2011. In 2024, RCB’s brand value was estimated at around $117 million.

History

The Indian Premier League was launched in 2008 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The Bengaluru franchise was acquired by Vijay Mallya for US$111.6 million, making it the second-highest bid at the time.

Rahul Dravid was the team’s first captain. Despite a star-studded squad featuring Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan, and Jacques Kallis, the team finished seventh in its debut season. Under Anil Kumble’s leadership, RCB reached its first IPL final in 2009 but lost to Deccan Chargers.

In 2011, RCB again reached the IPL final, powered by Chris Gayle, but finished as runners-up to Chennai Super Kings. The team also finished as runners-up in the Champions League T20 that year.

Between 2013 and 2021, Virat Kohli captained the side during a notable phase, alongside key players like Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers. The highlight came in 2016 when Kohli scored a record 973 runs in a single IPL season, although RCB lost the final to Sunrisers Hyderabad.

RCB finally achieved a historic milestone by winning its maiden IPL title in 2025, ending a long wait for the franchise.

Home Ground

The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru serves as the home ground of RCB. The stadium has a seating capacity of around 35,000 and is known for its vibrant atmosphere, especially during IPL matches, where fans create a lively and energetic environment.

The name “Royal Challengers” is derived from a liquor brand owned by Vijay Mallya. The team’s logo features a lion crest symbolizing strength and courage. Over the years, the logo has undergone several redesigns, notably in 2016, 2020, and after the 2024 rebranding to Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

The team’s primary colors are red and black, representing aggression, power, and passion, and these colors have remained a consistent part of the franchise’s identity.
