Phil Salt is an English cricketer. He represents England in limited-overs cricket and plays domestic cricket for Lancashire County Cricket Club. A right-handed opening batter, Salt occasionally keeps wicket and can bowl off-spin. He made his international debut in 2021 and was part of England’s squad that won the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022. He gained global recognition after scoring back-to-back T20I centuries against the West Indies.[1][2]
Early Life
Phil Salt was born in 28 August 1996, Bodelwyddan, Wales. He grew up in St Asaph, where he began playing cricket at a young age and represented North East Wales at the Under-11 level.[3][4]
At the age of 10, his family moved to Barbados, where he developed his cricketing skills further. During his time there, he played alongside future England teammate Jofra Archer.
Salt later returned to England at 15 on a cricket scholarship at Reed’s School, which played a crucial role in shaping his professional career.[5]
Education
Salt completed his schooling in Chester before moving to Barbados. After returning to England, he attended Reed’s School on a cricket scholarship, where he focused on developing his sporting career alongside academics.
Domestic Career
Salt started his professional cricket career with Sussex when he started their academy program in 2014. He demonstrated his cricketing abilities through his league appearances by achieving multiple high scores which included a double century performance in the Sussex Premier League. He began his List A career with Sussex during 2015 and he played his first T20 match in the NatWest T20 Blast competition during 2016. He also made his first-class debut the same year.
Salt played for Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League during 2019. In 2022 he joined Lancashire while he played for Manchester Originals in The Hundred tournament. Salt has participated in franchise cricket through his IPL appearances with Delhi Capitals Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
He was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad that won the Indian Premier League 2024 and later contributed to Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s title win in Indian Premier League 2025.
International Career
Salt made his ODI debut for England against Pakistan in July 2021. He made his T20I debut in January 2022 against the West Indies. In June 2022 he scored his first ODI century which totaled 122 runs against the Netherlands during a historic match where England reached a record 498-run total.
Later that year, he was part of England’s squad that won the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022. Salt reached his career milestone by scoring two consecutive T20I centuries during England’s 2023–24 West Indies tour. He scored 119 runs which made him the first England male cricketer to score back-to-back T20I hundreds. He played a crucial role in England’s 2024 T20 World Cup squad by scoring an 87-run match-winning performance during the West Indies match.

Phil Salt established himself as one of the most aggressive T20 opening batsmen through his ability to attack bowlers during powerplay periods. His attacking style combined with his ability to maintain performance levels, has made him an essential player for all international leagues, which include the Indian Premier League.
