Uttar Pradesh is bordered by Nepal to the north and other Indian states such as Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, New Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar. Lucknow is the capital of Uttar Pradesh. Prayagraj and Varanasi are important cultural centers.

Etymology

The etymology of Uttar Pradesh is derived from the Hindi language. The word “Uttar” means north, and the word “Pradesh” means province or region. Uttar Pradesh was originally known as the United Provinces during British rule. After India became a republic in 1950, the state was officially named Uttar Pradesh.

History
