Sarfaraz Naushad Khan is an Indian cricketer. He represents India in Test cricket while playing for Mumbai in domestic matches and joining Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the Indian Premier League. Sarfaraz gained early recognition for his record-breaking performances in school cricket and has since built a reputation as a consistent run-scorer in domestic cricket and a promising performer at the international level.

Early Life

Sarfaraz Khan was born in October 22, 1997 of Mumbai, Maharashtra. His family originally hails from Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. He spent his childhood years practicing cricket at Azad Maidan which is a famous cricket ground in Mumbai. His father Naushad Khan who also serves as his coach played a crucial role in developing his cricket skills since Sarfaraz was young. To overcome challenges like long travel during monsoon seasons, his father arranged a synthetic pitch near their home, allowing Sarfaraz to practice regularly and develop his technique, especially against bouncy deliveries.

Education

Sarfaraz dedicated himself to cricket from his early childhood which resulted in his absence from regular school for approximately four years. His family hired a private tutor to continue his education by teaching him Mathematics and English. He maintained academic studies while training for cricket despite his lack of formal schooling during that period.

Domestic Career

Sarfaraz first gained public recognition when he established a new Harris Shield record by scoring 439 runs during a single innings match at the age of 12 which had been held by Sachin Tendulkar. He went on to represent Mumbai in domestic cricket and later also played for Uttar Pradesh. His first-class career began in 2014 and he achieved outstanding results through his consistent performances which included a triple century achievement during the 2020 Ranji Trophy competition. He has secured his position as one of the leading run producers in domestic cricket especially during red-ball cricket matches. He displayed his adaptability through his performance as a wicketkeeper in T20 events which included the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy competition.

International Career

The India national cricket team selected Sarfaraz for his first Test match against England in February 2024. His first Test match performance included two half-century achievements when he scored 62 runs and 68 runs which made him one of the few Indian players to achieve this milestone. His batting approach together with his ability to hit the ball at a fast pace created an immediate impact at international competitions. His performances helped India secure a dominant victory in the match, marking a strong start to his international career.

IPL Career

Sarfaraz joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru for his IPL debut in 2015, which made him the youngest player to participate in the tournament at that time. On 6 August 2023 Sarfaraz Khan married Romana Zahoor. She comes from the Shopian district which belongs to the Jammu and Kashmir region. Despite achieving greater public recognition Sarfaraz maintains strong ties to his original community and he acknowledges his father and family members as his primary source of support throughout his cricket career.
